Since my last blog, the press have got their way and the FA has caved into their pressure by relieving John Terry of the captaincy. This will not end the matter because the press will be buoyed by their success and this will only succeed in encouraging them to try their luck even further. The longer the saga runs on, the happier the press are, because they can create more and more angles on it and fill more and more pages with it. After getting Terry relieved of the captaincy, the next targets are getting him sacked from the team altogether, involve Capello and try to fracture his relationship with the FA,( because they have taken a team management decision without consulting the team manager )and possibly force the manager out in the process. Quite simply John Terry has been found guilty of nothing yet, so why should he be punished?
I have little time for pundits because most of them failed in their attempts at management and yet they slaughter people who are trying their best to do the job under tremendous pressure. Graham Taylor springs to mind and already he is reported as criticising Capello for daring to speak his mind on the subject. Graham Taylor may have a short memory because he doesn’t seem to remember the difficulties that he had as England manager in failing to qualify for the 1994 World Cup and being mercilessly abused by the press who nicknamed him ‘Turnip’ and repeatedly depicted him as a human with the head of a turnip! I would expect that this experience might lead Taylor to show some empathy for Capello and Terry but sadly not. As part of the media machine Taylor now throws fuel on the fire seemingly unconcerned about those getting burned.
